The Salto PPD may connect to a lock by being plugged into the lock using the three-pronged cable that comes with the PPD or may be used wirelessly by holding the wireless symbol on the back of the PPD over the reader of the lock. Both methods work equally well and will be dependent on the lock model to determine which method is compatible. The following options are the functions that can be performed with the PPD.

  1. Update: This is used to bring the lock up to date with the latest information in the Salto System. To use this function, the door must have been selected and downloaded to the PPD during the loading process. Updates are most commonly used immediately after a lock’s batteries have been changed, or a lock’s settings have been altered in the system. To use the Update function:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Update Lock option (If the door was loaded, it should be the first option)
    3. Click the green button
    4. Connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    5. Wait until the PPD screen says Update Complete
    6. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.
    7. (Once all doors have been updated) Bring the PPD back to the location used to load the PPD.
    8. Reconnect the PPD to the system.
    9. Login to Salto Space
    10. Go to the “Systems” drop-down and click the PPD button
    11. Once the PPD menu pops up, all update information has been downloaded to the system and any update notifications in the system should be cleared.

  1. Firmware Diagnostics: This option is used to determine the current Firmware software versions a lock is running on and is often used by Tech Support rather than the owner of the locks on their own. Salto will occasionally release updated firmware software for their locks. Although locks often do not need the latest versions to function correctly, if a lock starts to function improperly, a Salto Tech may try updating the lock’s firmware in attempt to correct the issue. When working with tech support, the tech support agent may ask someone on site to run a firmware diagnostic to get the Firmware version the lock is currently running. To use the Firmware Diagnostics function:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Firmware Diagnostic option
    3. Click the green button
    4. Check the PPD screen shows the message “Connect to Lock”, then connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    5. Wait until the PPD screen shows the locks firmware information.

NOTE: Each Salto lock runs multiple Firmware. The different Firmware, and their versions, can be found by navigating the displayed information using the “Up” and “Down” arrow buttons on the PPD

  1. Record the firmware device numbers, as well as the version number for each device number.
  2. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.

  1. Update Firmware: This option is used to update the Firmware Software in a Salto lock. It is important that anyone on a Salto site never attempts to update Firmware without the assistance of Tech Support. Updating Firmware incorrectly, using the wrong Firmware versions, or using incompatible Firmware versions in Salto locks can cause locks to shut down, and may require a Salto Tech to go on site to fix, or even cause permanent damage to the locks. The following steps should only be taken with the assistance of a Voyager Access Technical Support Staff Member:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Update Firmware option
    3. Click the green button
    4. Check the PPD screen shows the message “Connect to Lock”, then connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    5. Wait until the PPD screen shows the locks firmware has been updated. (This can take several minutes and is much longer than a standard lock update)
    6. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.

  1. Collect Audit Trail: This option is used to get the full event stream off of the lock, with the intention of bringing it back to the Salto System to be read / investigated. Regardless of whether the site has other systems in place to get certain audits loaded to the system automatically, unless the lock is fully online there are events that can only be gotten by using the PPD to collect audits directly from the lock. Some of the audits you can get are, but not limited to (depending on the lock model, site license, and site set up): Keys presented by the lock, Keys rejected from the lock, Deadbolt Extended, Deadbolt Retracted, Door Held Open, Intrusion Alarms, Door Handles Turned, PPD Connected, Lock Updated, PPD Emergency Open Used. The PPD has memory and space to collect the audits of 200+ doors at a single time. To collect the lock audits, follow these steps:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Collect Audit Trail option
    3. Click the green button
    4. Check the PPD screen shows the message “Connect to Lock”, then connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    5. Wait until the PPD screen shows the Audit Collection has been completed.
    6. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.
    7. (Once all Audits have been Collected) Bring the PPD back to the location used to load the PPD.
    8. Reconnect the PPD to the system.
    9. Login to Salto Space
    10. Go to the “Systems” drop-down and click the PPD button
    11. Once the PPD menu pops up, all collected information has been downloaded to the system. Please note that the more Audits collected, the longer it may take for the PPD menu to pop back up.
    12. You can now navigate to the Audit Trail Page to see all the Audits collected. See Audit Trail Guide for more information.

  1. Emergency Opening: This option is used to open a lock when traditional keys have failed. To clarify, there are many situations where a key would fail but the PPD’s Emergency Opening Operation would succeed, however if there is a physical hardware issue with the lock, Emergency Opening will likely still not work. If a lock is rejecting keys, or the batteries are dead, the next best option is to use the Emergency Open Option to open the lock. Please note if the batteries are dead, contrary to popular belief, the PPD is not a jump box, the lock does not pull power from the PPD to open the lock. Instead, the lock saves what little power it has left for the Emergency Open function. This means that in the event of a dead battery on a lock, you officially have power for one opening with the PPD, and the opening should be treated as a one-time chance. This is also best avoided by keeping an eye on the battery levels shown within the Salto System. Because the PPD relies on the power provided by the batteries, should the power cable get unplugged, or the batteries are installed backwards, the PPD will be unable to open the lock using Emergency Open. It is highly recommended that any time a lock has work performed on it, no matter how small, the lock is tested prior to the door being shut. To use the Emergency Open function:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Emergency Open option
    3. Click the green button
    4. Check the PPD screen shows the message “Connect to Lock”, then connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    5. Wait until the lock unlocks (should be under three seconds)
    6. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.

  1. Initialize: This is one of the options that must be loaded at the time of loading the PPD. The Initialize option is used to program a lock, typically for the first time. When a lock is updated, its settings are only changed slightly to reflect the settings in the system. When a lock is Initialized, the programming of the lock is erased and reset, then the lock is programmed with the selected room information. Because all of the data is erased, this will also erase all lock audits, as well as any guest keys checked into that room (Hotels Only) To use the Initialize function:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Initialize option
    3. Click the green button
    4. Scroll through the list of all doors loaded on the PPD until you find the name of the door you want to Initialize.
    5. Click the Green Button
    6. Check the PPD screen shows the message “Connect to Lock”, then connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    7. Wait until the PPD screen shows the Initialization has been completed.
    8. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.

  1. Diagnostics: This option is used to collect certain information for tech support during the troubleshooting process. Except for the Battery Status, the on-site personnel will very rarely find anything useful in this menu. When using the Diagnostics function, steps listed below, the PPD operator can scroll through the list of information using the “Up” and “Down” arrow buttons to review and retrieve the different information collected from the lock. To use the Diagnostics function:
    1. Turn on the PPD
    2. Navigate to the Diagnostics option
    3. Click the green button
    4. Check the PPD screen shows the message “Connect to Lock”, then connect the PPD to the lock (either with the cable or wirelessly)
    5. Wait until the Diagnostics menu appears on the PPD Screen
    6. Disconnect the PPD from the lock.
    7. Scroll Through the Diagnostics menu as needed.
