Adding a New Door / Modifying an Existing Door
This guide will go over how to add a Door into the Salto Space System, as well as modifying existing Doors. Adding and modifying Guestroom Locks or Salto Locker Locks follow a very similar method but are not covered in this guide.
Modifying an Existing Door
The following steps are going to walk through how to modify an existing Door in the Salto Space System.
- Log into the Salto Space System. On the dark blue navigation bar, click on the “Access Points” drop down, and click on the “Doors” tab. This will bring up a page containing a list of all the current doors in your Salto system.
- Locate the Door, in the list of current doors, whose settings you wish to modify. This may be more easily found by clicking on the filter button at the top of the name column and searching for the door’s name or by a partial door.
- Once the door you wish to modify has been located in the Salto System, click on the door’s name. This should pull up the page displaying the current settings for the door.
- Jump to Step 3, in the below section “Adding a Door”, to go over each of the door settings, what each setting controls, and how to change them.
Adding a Door
The following steps are going to walk through how to add a Door into the Salto Space System.
- On the dark blue navigation bar, click on the “Access Points” drop down, and click on the “Doors” tab. This will bring up a page containing a list of all of the current doors in your Salto system.
- Locate the Add Door button in the bottom right corner of the Doors page. The Add Door Button is a light blue button with a plus sign followed by the word “ADD”. This will bring up a new page for you to register a new Door in the system.
- Set the Door’s options and settings in the system to best fit your site. Those options are as described below:
- Name. The first input for you to fill in is Name. This space is where you want to fill in the name you want to assign to the new Salto lock.
- NOTE: This is the only setting you need to change to save your new lock in the Salto system. If you would like to leave the other settings as defaults, you can continue to sub step f. The sub steps b - e will cover some of the common changes made to a door’s settings. If the option is not in the list below, the door option is not changed except in very rare circumstances and should be left as the default.
- Description. The second input for you to fill in is Description. This is an optional field you do not need to fill in, but it is available if you need to put in additional information to identify the door (door location, clarifying information, building it is in, left or right door, etc.). However, these are additional notes for the system only. Anything added to the description will not appear on the PPD (Portable Programming Device) or anywhere else.
- Connection Type. The connection type will determine whether the lock will be an online or an offline lock. An online will connect directly to the Salto Server and provide several additional benefits, however there is much more configuration that goes into setting up an online lock than switching this option to online. This guide does not provide further details on Online Lock setup. If you are putting in an online lock, or would like to bring a lock online, contact Voyager Tech Support to confirm your lock type is online compatible and assist with the additional configurations.
- Open Mode. The Open Mode drop down will determine how the lock will function and will always default to Standard mode. If you would like to change the Open Mode, click the drop down and select the open mode option you would like for this door. The options are described below (Please note the first four options are by far the most used options):
- Standard Mode: The lock only opens when an authorized key is used. When a key is presented, the lock will open until the predetermined time has passed, or until the handle of the lock is turned and released.
- Office Mode: The lock operates as if it was in standard mode most of the time, however it has the additional ability to enter “Office Mode”. Office Mode is when lock is left open by any user who has the office option selected in their user profile and has access to the door. The process to activate Office mode depends on the lock type and is one of the following:
- present the key to the lock, while keeping the inner handle pressed down.
- Present the key to the lock, once the lock presents a green light hold the key to the locks reader for 5-6 seconds.
- Name. The first input for you to fill in is Name. This space is where you want to fill in the name you want to assign to the new Salto lock.
When Office Mode is engaged in either option the reader will flash green to indicate the process worked. To disable the Office mode, repeat the process again.
- Timed Office: This is the same as the Office mode detailed above except that the Office mode is only allowed during custom time periods created within the Salto System (for example from 08:00 to 15:00). The time periods must be previously created; a process covered in a separate guide. Although the lock does not automatically unlock at the start of the set time, the lock will automatically revert to Standard mode at the end of each period, as it is no longer authorized to be unlocked.
- Automatic Opening: The lock opens automatically at specific times and remains open during a defined time (for example from 08:00 to 18:00). At the end of each time period, the lock closes and reverts to Standard mode.
- Toggle: The lock can be left open by any authorized user that presents a valid key. Unlike “Office Mode, holding down the inner handle is not required. The next authorized key presented then relocks the door. This continues switching (toggling) on every single use of a valid key.
- Timed Toggle: This mode operates in the same way as the Toggle mode described above, however only during the time period set within the system. Outside of these hours, the lock will operate in “Standard Mode”.
- Keypad Only: The lock can be opened at any time by typing a valid code on a keypad. The keypad code must contain between one and eight digits and is the same for every user. When you select the “Keypad Only” option from the Open Mode drop-down list, a keypad code field is displayed in which you can define the code. The lock can also be opened with a valid key.
- Timed Keypad: This mode is the same as the “Keypad Only” mode described above, except that the keypad is only allowed during a defined timed period. The lock can be opened with a key at any time.
- Key + PIN: The lock can only be opened using both a valid key and by typing a valid PIN on the keypad. The “Key + PIN” mode is a dual security control. If the PIN code is incorrect, access will not be granted. The PIN for this mode is set by individual keyholder in the user profile, which is covered in a separate guide.
- Timed Key + PIN: This is the same as the Key + PIN mode above except that the Key + PIN mode is only allowed during specific time periods. Outside of these time periods, the lock operates in Standard mode.
- Automatic Opening + Office: The door unlocks automatically at specific times and remains open during a defined time period (for example from 08:00 to 18:00). At the end of each time period, the lock is still able to manually be put into “Office Mode”.
- Automatic Opening + Toggle: The door unlocks automatically at specific times and remains open during one or more defined time periods (for example from 08:00 to 18:00). At the end of each time period, the lock operates in “Toggle Mode”.
- Automatic Changes: This mode is used when a lock needs to follow a more complex schedule and be set to include numerous opening modes throughout the day. The combination of modes is set by an Automatic Changes schedule, rather than a time period. Due to the complexity that Automatic Changes can reach, a lock that is set to this option must be an online lock.
- Keypad + Office: This mode is a combination of Keypad mode and Office mode. The lock opens when an authorized key is presented or when the defined keypad code of the door is typed. This code must contain between one and eight digits and is the same for every user. This opening mode also allows the lock into and out of the Office mode.
- Keypad + Toggle: This mode is a combination of Keypad mode and Toggle mode. The lock opens when an authorized key is presented or when the defined keypad code of the door is typed. This code must contain between one and eight digits and is the same for every user. This opening mode also allows the lock to operate in Toggle mode.
- Opening Times. The Opening Times will determine, once a key card is presented, how long the lock will remain open if the handle is not turned. Regardless of what the opening time is set to, the lock will be reengaged once the handle has been turned. The Extended opening time is a secondary time that “Extended Opening Time Users” can use. Users that need additional time to open a door (ADA or Handicapped Employees, Elderly Employees, Employees that often carry large amounts of material, etc.) can use the extended opening time set in each lock to allow more time to get through a door if needed. The setting to add extended opening to a user’s key card is set in User Settings and is not covered in this guide.
- Calendar: Without a calendar set on a lock, the lock does keep track of the date, the time, and daylight savings time (if applicable). Calendars are only used to keep track of Holidays, should you need a lock to perform or act differently during the holiday (skip automatic opening, hours changes, etc.).
- Door Options. There are three checkbox options in this section that determine additional features a lock can utilize. These options are:
- Audit on Keys: This option allows the lock to record and keep a record of which keys are used on the lock, and when they were used. Each offline lock keeps a record for the last 1000 audit events. This setting is HIGHLY recommended for every door on site.
- Audit Inside Handle: This option allows the lock to record and keep a record of when the inside handle of a lock has been turned, often indicating someone exited through that lock. This setting is typically recommended for a door. However, using the “Audit Inside Handle” option does also count to the 1000 audit count, and may not be necessary on some doors on property (common areas, pools, exteriors, and other doors people may be in and out all day).
- Admit Expired Keys X Days: This option allows keys to unlock doors, with this option enabled, even if the key has expired (this does not include canceled keys). This option is commonly used on employee entrances / breakrooms on sites that allow employees to take keys home with them and are utilizing the Soft Expiration in the User Settings.
- Antipassback: This is just one additional option that is available during the configuration of an Online lock. Online locks should be set up and configured by your lock vendor, so this is not an option you should have to worry about. If you are interested in this option, or bringing this lock online, contact Voyager Tech Support to confirm your lock type is online compatible and assist with the additional configurations.
- Limited Occupancy Area: If your site has Limited Occupancy Areas configured in your system, this is where you can add the door to the desired Area. Sites use Limited Occupancy Areas to limit the number of people in any room or designated area. Although sites can set up these areas on their own, its highly recommended a site interested in this feature contact Voyager Tech Support to do the initial set up.
- Assigning Access: Assigning who has access to this door is the first option that you will not have access to until you save the door for the first time. Once a door has been saved into the system, blue boxes will appear in the doors settings on the right side of the menu. The number of boxes that appear depend on the type of license your site has for the Salto System. No matter what license you have, you will always have the following three boxes:
- Users: This box is used to assign the lock directly to a User (if your system is properly configured, this is not recommended in most cases) or see which Users currently have this door directly assigned to them.
- Access Levels: This box is used to assign the lock directly to a User Access Level (if your system is properly configured, this is not recommended in most cases) or see which User Access Levels currently have this door directly assigned to them.
- Zones: This box is used to assign the lock directly to a Zone (if your system is properly configured, this is recommended in most cases, although its often easier to assign the doors in the Zones menu) or see which Zones currently have this door directly assigned to them.
Assigning Access is covered more in-depth in a separate guide.
- Once your door(s) has settings that you are satisfied with, the final step is to program / update the lock. Offline locks will need to be updated using the PPD (Portable Programming Device). Online locks will automatically update themselves within a ten-minute window. If additional information is needed on using the PPD, please see the Voyager Access Guide on using the PPD. It is also important to note that the PPD should never be used on online locks, except in very rare circumstances.
